Caption: The Process of Growing Up
My concept is to show that as we grow older, we become more "black." Some considered the color black as elegant and some thought of it as boring. Black represents adulthood for me, no matter what people think about the color. The verbs that people use to describe the color black are similar to those that are used to describe adulthood. Black also represents a tainted individual.
On the very left, a small doll was hanged. The doll represents our innocent years. As we grow older, we need to work and not playing. Work is represented by blazers and childhood is represented by the doll, in term of size and figuratively speaking. The doll is significantly smaller in the image and considered to be an insignificant portion of the image. Childhood works the same way. It is considered to be short and insignificant. People judged us by our occupations rather than what we used to do when we were kids. However, at the same time, childhood is the most memorable time for most of people and it is uniquely different from our experience as working adults.
The image can also work as a portrayal of our ordinary days. I hope to capture the humor of our daily chores. Blazers and one toy can also be looked as, "There may be a child in all of us after all."
The inspiration came from my desire to portray adulthood and childhood in the same picture without being too explicit. I want subtlety and a bit of humor. Thus, I came up with the idea of combining something very business-like - several blazers - and something childish - a doll.
I composed this image using the drying lines behind my apartment. I like the lines as it drew my attention from left to the right just like when we read books. The gradient of color is intentional in this image to represent the process of growing up.
